WELCOME TO KINTBURY VILLAGE,
West Berkshire

|
intbury is a large village in the Kennet Valley between Hungerford and Newbury, one of many lovely villages in the area. The river Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal are on the north side with their lovely watermeadows beyond, while to the south the land rises steadily to the chalk downs. It is a very beautiful area with many woods and pastures in unspoilt country. Motorway Junctions 13 (Newbury),14 (Hungerford ),and the A34 bypass, are within easy reach with fast access to Heathrow, London and the West Country the North (A34) and South (A34).
intbury is an old village: documentary evidence of its existence dates from 93.A.D. but the Romans were here earlier and by Domesday 1087, it had seven entries in the great book. The Normans built the large church, whose churchyard in Spring is white with wild snowdrops. The centre of the village is much the same in its layout as it was 1000 years ago but the buildings are, of course, later - 17thc, 18th, 19th and 20th century and in the centre are very good shops attracting many from other villages, where one can buy the necessities of life, and also a gift shop, pottery, and florsit The village has its own modern medical centre. There are two village pubs, both offering food and 1 pub/restaurant/hotel set between the banks of the River Kennet & the Kennet & Avon Canal. There are many other excellent village pubs and restaurants in nearby villages and Hungerford town has a abundance of pubs & restaurants There is a primary school in the village, other state schools are in nearby Hungerford and Newbury and there are private schools in the area, including Cheam. Hungerford, an attractive and historic country town, approximately 3 miles from Kintbury offers many facilities, a variety of interesting shops plus 2 supermarkets, stunning Hungerford Common- several acres of open land alongside the Kennet & Avon Canal, and the wonderful water meadows, again canal side and offering wildlife and peaceful walks;the energetic can walk to Bath or Reading or even London. |

Kintbury has increased in latter years, particularly so since the advent of the computer industry to the area in the 80’s but still retains its village character and has the reputation of being most friendly offering an excellent environment in which to live, having a great sense of community within the village and with easy access to
business centres. There are village activities for all tastes. Sport is well catered for in a good recreation hall and ground , tennis club, football club, bowls club. There is something for all ages. There are many beautiful walks and excellent horse riding, there is a village hall, housing most of the 30+ clubs and associations Kintbury offers, including Drama Groups, music societies, art classes, a horticultural society,a bridge club and a wildlife club. The range of interests is shown by the diversity of activities available in the village - Kintbury is interesting, a lovely place to live and FUN.

The Club is situated in a very pleasant, tree surrounded setting just behind the Jubilee Sports Centre in Inkpen Road.

An active "Junior Section", with coaching for those who want it, makes the KTC available to youngsters and to whole families, not just to energetic oldies

THE BELLS OF ST MARY - KINTBURY

The Tower Group
The first historical mention of bells in Kintbury is in the Commissioners' Inventory of 1552, in the reign of Edward VI:
'Kyntbury iiij belles in the steple and a saunce bell.. . a sakaring belle'.
It is likely that these were all recast to provide the current 4th, 6th, 7th and Tenor bells; the sixth around 1576 and the others in 1629-30. The original four-bell frame survived for over 300 years until 1922 - the two later bells cast in 1669 and 1702 were squeezed into pits around it.
It is thought that the Tenor, together with the original Second and the Fifth bells, were cast in the parish by an itinerant founder, Nicholas Boulter, who also cast some of the bells at Lambourn and Buckland. At that time it was common practice for church bells to be cast either adjacent to a church or close by and this is often commemorated in many parishes by the name given to localities, such as Bellfields or Bell Lane.
The Third was cast by Robert Cor of Aldbourne, the Sixth by William Knight II and the Fifth by Henry Knight II, both of Reading.
The two newest bells, cast by Alan Hughes at Whitechapel Foundry were added in 1995, one being in memory of Sir Gordon Richards who had lived in the village for many years.
A complete refurbishment of the bells and ringing chamber was finally completed in 1995 and the bells were blessed during a visit to Kintbury by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, when she came to unveil a plaque to Sir Gordon Richards. This fine bronze by William Newton, who was also a jockey and lived in the village, can be seen on the North wall of the Nave.
The first peal (of Plain Bob Major) on the new eight took place on 20th January 1996.
A number of plaques in the ringing chamber record when the bells have rung for special occasions, such as for the Queen Mother's funeral, the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the Millennium, local weddings and on various occasions in remembrance of a former ringer. Many peals of varying complexities have been rung on these bells - a peal lasting just over three hours - and they have proved a favourite choice for visiting ringers from as far afield as Philadelphia in the U.S.A. and Australia .
To celebrate the rehanging in 1995 Kintbury now has its own method - Kintbury Surprise Major - this being composed by Geoff Dodd, a well-known local ringer who has himself rung well over 3,000 peals to date.
The colour of the new rope sallies was chosen as blue and gold, corresponding to Gordon Richards' racing colours. A trick of the light changes the colour of these to maroon as they move during ringing.
The bell (known as 'Little Moppy') from the Paddock frequented by Sir Gordon at Windsor racecourse was donated to St. Mary's at this time and is now hung in the belfry as a Sanctus bell. At the same time a further bell was donated and this is inscribed each year with the name of the current winner of the Derby. In the Autumn each year the Guest of Honour at the Sir Gordon Richards Memorial concert in the church is invited to chime Sir Gordon's own bell in the tower. The first year, in 1995, this was undertaken by the winner of the Derby, Walter Swinburn. The Derby bell can be seen mounted on a stand close to the pulpit.
Kintbury Bellringers are privileged to have a very pleasant chamber in which to ring, the walls of which contain a pictorial record of the refurbishment and the Queen's visit, together with photographs and details of the many tours which the ringers have undertaken to widely different parts of the country. Being probably one of the more sociable band of ringers in the country, Kintbury Bellringers have numerous social events during the year, as well as their tours and outings and also have a reputation for their home-made wine. Visitors are always welcome at practices on a Thursday night or to help with ringing on Sunday mornings.
Contact numbers are: 01488 658660 or 658670.

Viltis
Arts & Handcrafts From Lithuania
Welcome to the world of thought, quality and imagination.

Viltis showroom opened its doors to the first customers late autumn, 2001 with a unique range of handcrafted products by young artists and experienced craftsmen from Lithuania. In the Lithuanian language the word Viltis means hope or aspiration, and you cannot find a better word to express the shop owner's aim best.
Sigita Pagdin, the owner of the company, came to the UK several years ago and, having spent many years in international trade in her native Lithuania, saw a huge potential for high quality linen and unique, unusual giftware items. Her aim to promote the works of Lithuanian people through small private companies and individual buyers has proved to be successful. The number of customers is steadily increasing, word of mouth and internet advertising bringing people from various parts of the country.
Whether you are looking for an unusual gift for someone special or something unique for yourself, a visit to Viltis is a good place to start.

1. FOILPRINT
We have been printing Wedding and Funeral Stationery, Business & Christmas cards and other items for people in the village and close-by areas for around the last 20 years, as well as Gold-blocking village memorabilia such as leather bookmarks and coasters.
We operate a personalized service and can offer some very individual designs to anyone who would like something 'just that little bit different'.
2. METALPRINT
Our unique process allows us to print photographs on metal plaques in very fine detail. These can be taken from colour photographs but the process (derived from a specification for nameplates for use at sea by the U.S.Navy) currently only allows these to be printed in black & white and shades of grey, although a limited range of colours can be used for blocks of text or line drawings such as borders.
Our plaques are suitable as permanent commemoratives for many events such as awards, tree plantings, weddings, family trees and historical records of occasions such as births, house purchase, etc. We have bellringing peal plaques in over 400 churches throughout England, Wales, the U.S.A. and Australia. Various types of mounting boards are available if required.
KINTBURY PARISH MAGAZINE
Editor: Gill Clements
We also produce 'The Fisherman' - the monthly Parish Magazine for Kintbury. This is edited and printed by us in booklet form and contains news of the past month's and forthcoming events in Kintbury, together with other useful information. Copies are available from a number of outlets in the village and are delivered individually to subscribers' homes.
There is normally a waiting list for advertisers, although occasional 'one-offs' are available when space permits.
Contacts for all the above: Derek or Gill Clements on 01488 658670 (Tel & Fax) or email metalprint@aol.com |

Volunteer to save lives in your community!
The Volunteer Centre West Berkshire is working in conjunction with the Royal Berkshire Ambulance NHS Trust to set up a team of volunteer community responders in your area. Community responders are trained in resuscitation techniques, including the giving of oxygen and use of defibrillators.
Why do we need Community Responders?
- 300,000 heart attacks happen each year
- 160,000 people die of coronary heart disease before reaching the age of 65
- Someone dies of coronary heart disease every 3 minutes
- Single largest cause of early deaths in Great Britain and Ireland
- Most will die before the ambulance arrives
- Only 5% will survive
- 85% have the potential to survive
- Chances of survival reduces by 10% for every minute defibrillation is delayed
 Who are Community Responders?
Community Responders are NOT sent in place of the ambulance, they bridge the gap between the 999 call and the arrival of the paramedics, they are part of the
co-ordinated approach to saving lives
